I got it back, your post inspired me to play with the external data pane docking and it appeared out of nowhere as a small floating pane I have a similar problem, but none of these solutions are applicable. I appear to have a Visio file that has the settings corrupted.
I can see the Shapes window on every other Visio file I have. This one, all of a sudden, no Shapes windows. I also cannot see the tabs on the bottom that allow you to select the 11 different sheets that are in this file. It is not that the Shapes pane has become undocked and is hidden off screen, and that would not explain the absence of the tabs, either. I have tried every trick I know to look for the Shapes window if it is undocked and off screen and I cannot find it, so I'm sure it's not there so, for example, disconnect and disable all external monitors and resize the main screen down to x - no Shapes window then nor when I resize back to normal resolution.
I went to File Options Customize Ribbon to make sure the options appeared and they are all there, but they are greyed out so that I cannot, should I choose, remove or edit them in any way. In fact, unlike other uncorrupted files, a LOT of stuff is greyed out in File. I did try to save the file out as an XML document and reopen and that did not fix it.
I do also know that all of the data is still there, because when I save out as a PDF all of my sheets print out. I tried saving to CAD formats and that only saved sheet which is not the shown sheet and I have no control over which sheet is saved. I'm really frustrated if I lost all of this, so I'm really hoping that someone has an idea how to recover the data out of this file electronically so I don't have to rebuild it all from the PDF by hand.
