How many successful prison escapes

The Ohio State Highway Patrol checks criminal records, death certificates and social media annually for clues on cold cases, spokesman Lt. Craig Cvetan said. A convicted killer who escaped a California prison work camp in was arrested in after authorities heard his dying mother had sought to contact him. They checked her phone records. June 19, am.

Prison systems say they keep pushing. While a Justice Department budget report submitted to Congress said the Bureau of Prisons had no escapes from secure facilities, it does not count those who escape from minimum-security prisons or camps. Federal prison camps were originally designed with low security to make operations easier and to allow inmates tasked with performing work at the prison, like landscaping and maintenance, to avoid repeatedly checking in and out of a main prison facility.

Aside from Texas escapees, law enforcement officials have also routinely learned of inmates at the prison just walking off the grounds to retrieve drugs and other contraband that is dropped off in the woods and then bringing the illegal items back inside with them.

It has become routine at FCI Beaumont for cars to drop drugs, cellphones and other contraband in the woods, leaving them for inmates to break out of the prison at night and pick up the items before sneaking back inside, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the matter. The official could not discuss the investigations publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The office issued a memorandum this week highlighting glaring security gaps at Beaumont and other federal prison camps. To make matters even cloudier, some states don't separate out escapes and AWOLs in their reports at all.

According to the BJS, the state of Alabama had more than escapes in That number is entirely meaningless, said Robert Horton, public information officer for the Alabama Department of Corrections.

Like in New York, those are people who are supervised in community corrections and work programs. If they don't report in on time or walk off a worksite for over two hours, they're registered as an escape as a matter of department policy, said Horton. Out of the reported escapes in , only three left a community work center, 16 walked off a work site, and one actually escaped from a secured facility.
