How do legends differ from myths

Some famous myths include the story of Narcissus and Echo, adventures of Hercules, the story of Theseus and the Minotaur, the story of Loki etc.

A legend is a traditional narrative that is popularly perceived to be historical fact, but not authenticated. Legends usually have some connection to real events or locations and there is some factual basis in legends; this is why they are popularly believed to be true. Legends are also woven around historical figures who are considered as heroes. But their heroic deeds are often exaggerated and distorted in legends. However, these characters and events may be incorporated with many supernatural elements.

Considering all these facts, we can come to the conclusion that though legends may have some facts, they are not entirely factual or real. Myth is a traditional story especially one concerning the early history of people or explaining a natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events. Legend is a traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but not authenticated. However, legends are about real-life people and what they did.

Legends always have an important purpose, but the facts are always a little exaggerated to make them more interesting and exciting! Generally, some of the facts are dramatically altered and the person the legend is about never really did what the story says.

Now, a fable is also a story that is passed down. A fable is about animals, plants, or forces of nature that can talk and act like humans. Fairy tales are probably one of the most popular today. Fairy tales are specifically for kids and often have a lot to do with magic like a fairy godmother, elves, or any supernatural character. Animals can also be characters in a fairy tale. Fairy tales always have good characters and evil characters.

These myths could be elaborated accounts of historical events, an account of natural phenomena; a way to justify a ritual or teach behavior or morals. Legends are stories about real people, considered as heroes, that have been passed down generation to generation. As the event actually happened sometime in the past, there may be evidence to support the stories.

There are no supporting evidences available for these stories, though some stories such as Indian Mythology claim places in the stories exist.
