Why is delver of secrets so good

Like Delver of Secrets , Dragon's Rage Channeler is a 1-mana creature that becomes a 3-powered flyer. Where it goes further is its ability to surveil on each spell cast, offering unparalleled card selection while filling the graveyard. It became an instant-staple in Modern, Legacy, and even Vintage.

In some cases it has replaced Delver of Secrets , but it also does great work alongside it — hence today's Izzet Delver on a Budget. Dragon's Rage Channeler not only sets up the draw step with its surveil ability, but also quickly fills the graveyard. That enables its own Delirium ability, as well as fueling anything else, like the Dreadhorde Arcanist , that this deck uses as another threat alongside its eight three-powered one-drops.

The deck is full of instant and sorcery spells to enable Delver of Secrets and Dragon's Rage Channeler , most of them one-mana. That makes Dreadhorde Arcanist a perfect fit as a nearly endless source of card advantage.

Once it gets going, it becomes very hard to stop, as removal clears the way for more attacks, and card draw finds more spells to cast — maybe even with surveil helping at the same time. Broken enough to be banned in Legacy, it finds a perfect home in this Modern deck. While it's just a bad Shock at face value, a Delirium-enabled Unholy Heat quickly becomes a hard removal spell that can take down big creatures — especially those that have historically caused problems for red decks.

Everything from Tarmogoyf to Gurmag Angler to even Primeval Titan can now be dispatched for one mana, making old answers like Vapor Snag obsolete. MH2 finally brought Counterspell to Modern, and this deck makes great use of it as a versatile piece of disruption. The second reason is that blue is generally the best color in Legacy, and specifically the best color for an aggressive shell.

Early on in this Legacy Guide, I covered some of the best and most defining cards in the Legacy format. You can even pitch it to Force of Will! Specifically, having Brainstorm and the other cantrips allow the Delver decks to function as well-oiled machines. The cantrips also allow you to build your deck with a low land count often only fifteen sources of colored mana , because you can comfortably keep one-land opening hands so long as they contain a Brainstorm or Ponder.

Additionally, having control over the top of your library allows you to shuffle away extra lands when you draw too many, facilitating an extremely efficient deck filled with one- and two-mana spells, that rarely runs out of gas. Blue also has the most effective disruption in Legacy, with all-purpose permission spells that are good against a wide variety of strategies.

In a format as wide open as Legacy, this is extremely valuable. This is something that makes them much different from the single-minded beatdown decks of Standard and Pioneer. Delver players diversify their gameplans with lots of one- and two-of sideboard cards that allow them to attack from new angles, dismantle combo decks, and punish opponents that overdo it on creature removal spells.

To me, no deck encapsulates the spirit of the Legacy format like Temur Delver. Siphon Insight Art by Livia Prima. Dimir Delver. Creatures 15 4. Instants 23 2.

Sorceries 1 1. Lands 21 8. Expressive Iteration Art by Anastasia Ovchinnikova. Izzet Delver. Instants 16 4. Sorceries 8 4. Lands 19 Ascendant Spirit Art by Lie Setiawan. Izzet Snow Delver. Instants 17 4. Big Izzet Delver. Creatures 12 4. Instants 15 4. Sorceries 10 2.

Cons: Stifle is a very binary card in that it either wins you the game or does nothing—many cards in the deck are like this. Cons: Less coherent game plan, UWR Delver typically excels when the format is more creature-based because it has a plethora of 1-mana removal.

Pros: Great against combo, Hymn also gets you a significant amount of free wins. Generally, I consider Lands and Miracles as pretty tough matchups for Delver. You have the tools to beat both decks, but you will have to play carefully and get a bit lucky. Honestly, it appears to me that the format will return to pre-KTK Legacy with Miracles as the top dog and Lands as a new primary player.

The metagame has never felt more hostile to Delver of Secrets. Decks with Ponder mulligan a lot less because they are able to keep more 1-landers. The decks without Ponder such as Merfolk or MUD tend to mulligan more, and directly benefit as the scry rule helps them hit the right number of land drops in the early turns.

People have also been talking about how this rule can help out Delver players because knowing the top card can help flip Delvers. The following conditions must be met for the Delver player to benefit. Now, if the card on top is an instant or sorcery, you get the power of the information that your Delver will flip.
