Why goblins dont trust wizards

This includes issuing decrees that prevented them from obtaining wands, which was probably because humans were terrified of being "overthrown". The Wizengamot represents the jurisprudential facet of the Ministry of Magic ; in other words, the organization is composed of mostly judges and other legal scholars. This is where Dolores Umbridge holds mock trials of innocent Muggle-born wizards and witches , and in the past, it had been used in matters of arbitration involving the Death Eaters following the first fall of Lord Voldemort.

Although first entering into force in the mids, the Wizengamot specifically excluded the Goblins from representation, forcing them to protest. In , the Goblins amassed as many supporters as they could in favor of their cause, and decided to maintain a tentative base of operations in the village of Hogsmeade. They specifically used one of the many buildings that populate the village as their command center, but the accurate location has not been confirmed historically.

However, it seems more than likely that the Goblins appropriated one of the two pubs, either Hog's Head currently under Aberforth Dumbledore or Three Broomsticks currently run by Madam Rosmerta. These events have influenced the magical world to a considerable degree, so much so that they are part of the required syllabus taught at Hogwarts. Professor Binns, the ghost who teaches History of Magic, is the first to reference the Goblin Rebellions in his classes, but his students are simply unable to keep track of all the various names.

For example, Ron complains about the strange epithets for the characters he's studying, while Harry just avoids the topic during the O.

Though it's true that the Goblin Rebellions had an unwanted amount of bloodshed and violence, this historical depiction could be an addition made by the Ministry to reduce their own responsibility and lay the blame entirely on the oppressed.

Recasting The Characters. However, it must be mentioned that these poor beings also suffered greatly at the hands of their human counterparts, such as the vile Yardley Platt, who went around murdering Goblins for no reason in the late 15th and early 16th centuries.

The Harry Potter Wiki page on Goblins has the following to say about them:. Due to their skills with money and finances , they control the wizarding economy to a large extent and run Gringotts Wizarding Bank. Furthermore, this article goes on to say that Gringotts was established back in the 15th century. So, considering that Goblins are responsible for creating the money in the first place and then have established an effectively monopoly over the wizarding economy, it seems that the Wizards don't really have any choice.

It would seem that goblins are probably better at finances than wizards themselves are, so they have come to rely upon them. Basically the wizards don't have a choice but to trust the goblins! It is true that there is quite a bit of tension between the goblins and the wizards, especially that wizards treat goblins as inferior beings, but although wizards don't openly acknowledge this that I can find, it seems that by using Gringotts wizards are implicitly conceding that goblins are very effective in the finance sector.

Another important point to raise is that goblins do have their own magic, so although it is true a wizard could establish a particularly safe bank, we shouldn't underestimate the power of goblins. Consider the following extract:. Their weaponry and armour are nearly indestructible when created and have their own kinds of magical properties. So, although we don't know for sure exactly what powers goblins have, we do know that if they can make weaponry and armour that is "nearly indestructible" and can have magical properties, they'd make an excellent choice for creating a bank that needed to be impenetrable.

If we take a look at our history - the first banks in Europe were created and operated by jews around the 15th century. Jews were greatly mistrusted by the christian majority in Europe at that time with this distrust becoming a hate or open violence on several occasions. Same goes for goblins - the goblin-wizard relations were cold at best during most of the time and there were several wars between them. So it is possible that JKR took the idea about Gringotts being operated by goblins from the actual history of banking in Europe.

As a side note: Gringotts is not much of a bank. It acts as a safe storage for money and valuables and as monetary regulator. Still it does not or at least we don't see perform any activities like loan giving or having fiscal instruments.

Of course we might not see it because it is not relevant for the story. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top.

Ludo Bagman , got on the wrong side of a group of goblins when he swindled them out of a large amount of gold at the Quidditch World Cup in the summer of When the Death Eaters started rising in power, people feared the goblins would have joined Voldemort, as did other oppressed such as werewolves and giants.

However, this did not happen, as Voldemort even murdered a Goblin family near Nottingham , leading to them standing at a neutral point. Goblins could use magic without the aid of a wand , although they were insulted by the refusal of wizards to allow them to use wands.

In turn, goblins concealed the secrets of their magic from wizards. Their weaponry and armour were nearly indestructible when created and had their kinds of magical properties. There seemed to be several jobs available at Gringotts for wizards, in addition to those positions held by goblins, though they were largely behind-the-scenes. Bill Weasley took a job as a Curse-Breaker , hunting treasure in Egypt after his graduation from Hogwarts. The job was described in a pamphlet available to Hogwarts students.

When he wanted to do work for the Order of the Phoenix , Bill transferred to a desk job in England to be near home. That same year, Fleur Delacour took a job at Gringotts as well, to improve her English, though she only worked part-time. There also seemed to be a full-time security force that was comprised of wizards, and that rushed to the scene when the Lestranges vault was broken into.

They also employed Dragon Feeders, a job with a high mortality rate, at 7 Galleons per week. Griphook holding the Sword of Godric Gryffindor , a goblin-made object which he believes rightfully belongs to the makers, not the buyers.

Overall, goblins' idea of payment and repayment were not the same as humans. Goblins disliked theft but used a different definition of the word.

By goblin standards, the maker of an item, not the purchaser, was the rightful owner; the item was required to be returned to its maker after the death of the purchaser. Goblins believed that the wizard paying for a goblin-made artefact was merely renting it, not owning it.

Goblins considered the passing of an item from one wizard or witch to another without further payment to its maker "little more than theft", as Bill Weasley put it. Goblins also held the debt to extremes, as they hunted down Ludo Bagman after he lost a bet with them, and even though they took everything of value from him after he cheated them with Leprechaun gold , they still hounded him due to it being not enough to cover his debt. Dealings between wizards and goblins have been fraught for centuries There has been fault on both sides, I would never claim that wizards have been innocent. However, there is a belief among some goblins, and those at Gringotts are perhaps most prone to it, that wizards cannot be trusted in matters of gold and treasure, that they have no respect for goblin ownership.

Harry Potter : " Wizards have banks? Run by goblins. Never mess with goblins, Harry. Main article: Goblin Rebellions. We cannot live without it, yet I confess I deplore the necessity of consorting with our long-fingered friends. All goblin-made objects are, in goblin eyes, rightfully theirs.
