The song's melodic and low-key groove was inspired by the work of soul-pop diva Sade and "a lot of islandy feel good records," says Kearney. I wanted it to be something you could lay back to on vacation, but then when you strip it down it's a great singer-songwriter track. I wanted the song to marry those two worlds. The song grew out of a conversation between the two men, who originally met when the Nashville-based group opened for Kearney on tour. I've had moments in my career when I've made more money and had more success than at other times, but I've realized being happy has very little to do with any of that.
I have a little girl now and am happier than ever. Judah said we should write about that. The song underscores that being fulfilled has very little to do with material things.
His 1-year-old daughter Olive has changed his life personally and professionally. Kearney writes his songs in the morning now to adapt to her schedule. His lyrics have a wiser tone these days, resembling the words of a seasoned older friend sharing his experiences. The singer-songwriter is also making adjustments to life on the road. On his current tour, his wife and daughter will accompany him as he travels to a number of dates. His college roommate had a guitar and Kearney learned a few chords. Given that his instrumental skills were rudimentary, it was frustrating trying to figure out popular tunes. He found it easier to write his own songs instead. People who heard his original material responded positively to the work. The only people I was trying to impress were my little brother and my best friends.
In , Kearney tried to tap back into all that. He took a trip to Joshua Tree with a couple of those friends to write and record songs. They settled into a house that was completely solar powered, and set up a ton of recording gear.
No Wi-Fi, no cell phone service. We're basically stranded in the middle of nowhere, with no lights. I was like, 'What are we going to do? Kearney dialed back on the rhymes for his follow-up effort, Nothing Left to Lose. Three years later, Kearney delivered his follow-up, Just Kids. The album saw him working once again with Josh Crosby -- as well as MDL Justin Bieber , Maroon 5 -- while drawing influence for the album from his time growing up in Eugene.
He then joined Needtobreathe on tour, and returned with the singles "Face to Face" and "Better Than I Used to Be" from his full-length, the chart-topping Crazytalk. AllMusic relies heavily on JavaScript. Please enable JavaScript in your browser to use the site fully.
