How many people at wickerman

While Schaffer is no longer around to oversee new edits of his film he passed away in , we can only assume that he meant for the dialogue he wrote to be there. Despite my crushing disappointment at yet another incomplete cut of "The Wicker Man" being foisted on the public as somehow being complete, I can't fault the year-old Hardy for getting behind what may be the best, most complete cut of his film he'll see in his lifetime.

For Hardy, "The Wicker Man" has always been a towering achievement cast in a shadow of inadequacy; first from the film's own distributors who wanted to bury it maybe even literally , and then from fans like me who keep insisting Hardy give us more than what can be excavated from archives.

How some fly-by-night outfit such as Magnum Entertainment got their hands on the minute print in the s, and what they did with it, remain a mystery. Bob Calhoun is a former wrestler, ring announcer and peep show barker.

In his latest book, "Shattering Conventions: Commerce, Cosplay and Conflict on the Expo Floor," he explores the temporary worlds created in comic-cons, " Star Trek " cons, conspiracy cons, hemp expos, gun shows and rodeos. Features "The Wicker Man": The cut may be final, but the film is still incomplete. Bob Calhoun October 04, Once armed with my very own copy, I became an evangelist for "The Wicker Man" as intense as Edward Woodward 's Christian cop in the film.

I forced or at least cajoled friends to sit down and watch every last minute of this, the only complete version of it that you could find on the entire San Francisco Bay Area peninsula.

Most of my friends were all just as won over by its death and duality mixed with sex and Scottish song as I was. Many of them made their own copies of my copy, the analog equivalent of going viral. It is also during this sequence in the police station where Howie receives the anonymous letter that draws him to the small island of Summerisle in search of the missing girl, Rowan Morrison, setting the film's bizarre chain of events in motion.

But it passed off successfully with Irish punk rockers Stiff Little Fingers headlining the fledgling, homespun, event staged in front of a couple of thousand spectators. I didn't experience Wickerman's delights until I was hooked. In the early years, the audience was a mixture of local folk amazed and delighted that this was happening on their doorstep and visiting festival veterans who at that time were very much of punk and hippy persuasion and who found Wickerman's edgy, eighties, retro vibe very much to their liking.

For a number of years Mrs J and I chose to be day visitors, travelling home to a comfy bed on the Friday night and returning to the festival on the Saturday afternoon. Rose is a truly ancient caravan s vintage which we picked up for a few quid on Ebay and kitted out with the sole intention of using it once a year, and once a year only.

So, for five or six festivals up to , Rose was duly washed down, scrubbed up and trundled the 30 miles from Dumfries to Dundrennan for us to sample the full Wickerman experience without resorting to a tent.

Unfortunately, I didn't always have a car with a tow-bar and a couple of times had to borrow my son's which is black and covered from bonnet to back bumper in dramatic Iron Maiden decals. It was quite a sight: a metal-head's car towing a barely roadworthy caravan whose prime had been in the days of glam rock. Two years ago our rig did provide great amusement to the police at the gate. Seeing us approach they readied themselves in anticipation of a potential drugs bust, only to wave us through with a laugh after seeing the two mortified fifty-somethings in the front seats.

Wickerman changed over the years. It became bigger and more commercial. Some said it lost a bit of its edge. The audience became less alternative and more mainstream. Helensburgh Winter Festival Winter festival, with a festive market featuring over stalls, as well as a full programme of….

Wickerman Festival - DJ Danny Rampling interview 23 Jul It might not be on the same scale as T in the Park or Rock Ness but the Wickerman is happily striding forth into its eighth year as an alternative to the many big buck corporate festivals. Festival Fever 1 Jun Each year, the glow of summer brings with it a particularly exciting string of events - the live music festivals! Then there is that extra evidence to suggest this is one of the great Gothic horrors.

How may of the cast are actually playing themselves? There are the people in the public house and the elderly folk by the harbour. This gives off its own air of disturbance in the sense they might be playing themselves and what with the commentary on society as a whole, the two seem to bind together all the too nicely. Then there is the attention to faces early on. The chocolates in the baker's window have faces on them and the close up of the pub sign has a face on it.

There is also the excessive wearing of masks later on as identity is toyed and revealed but generally kept ambiguous. Is this the future of the society circa ?

Do we know what we believe in terms of religion? And where we are going in the future? What about the schools and the policing? Will this be the sad reality of a nation gone mad if these things are cut back on? I think these are the sorts of questions the writers are raising by making a film like this and it must've been all the more disturbing in So if The Wicker Man succeeds as a statement then it certainly succeeds as a piece of Gothic horror.

It mixes in the uncanny with the surreal and it carries a distinct atmosphere of dread all throughout. There is ambiguity all over the place but I especially liked the attention to the film's music: is it diegetic or not?

Sometimes it is and others it isn't but it's such a head-trip of a soundtrack that it's difficult to notice most of the time. This surely one of the better British films ever made.
